Cooking your meals from scratch, and using as many whole, local and organic ingredients as possible is one of the best things you can do for yourself, your family, and the planet.
If such sentiments make you roll your eyes, take heart: you are part of the problem! It
is imperative that people wake up and begin giving a shit about
themselves and the dire straits this world is in. Food is one of
the easiest, most effective, most rewarding ways to do so.
We
cook often here on
Sarabande to save money, stay healthy, and to reduce waste. Plus,
it's a relaxing and creative outlet and with a little skill you
can eat like royalty! Here on our boat, sans
microwave, sitting on one's big fat ass and heating up another Hot
Pocket is not an option, and we prefer it that way.
Also, living on a boat really makes you think twice about the toxic chemicals used when cleaning one's living space. It's not uncommon for us to look outside and see a duck paddling around in the suds from dishes we just washed! Therefore, we use only naturally derived, fully biodegradeable, environmentally friendly agents for our everyday cleaning up. We highly recommend Dr. Bronner's SAL SUDS for all regular household jobs-- we use it to wash the boat, do the dishes, mop the floors and clean the head! It's highly concentrated, smells good, and the amount of suds from just a dash is ridiculous. Also, see below for recipes of some excellent homemade cleaners we use onboard as well.
